Damn, for a minute there it had slipped my mind but this edit just reminded me of how much of an awesome time I had at this year’s L’Eroica… Look at my face at the top of the first climb, Never after slogging my guts out have I looked so happy! Must be the wine.

Day one on Saturday sees the flea market come into town, I say flea market it is a great big cycle jumble in English terms. Stretched out either side of Gaiole’s main road this jumble is big and not only is it big, it is good, very good. Everything you ever needed for your period build and all the accompaniments to go with it can be found here. Even the rarest of the rare is on the tables, it seems that the cream of Italy’s cycle merchandise dealers have landed in Chianti for the day to bless all of the hungry with their wares. You simply do not get a selection this good in the U.K.

I could have bought it all, I really could. Had I gone there with an empty suitcase and a full bank account I surely would have at least grabbed a frame or two, and some wheels, and a groupset and then probably most of the other needed components to build a complete. Instead I bought a Gios T-shirt, I figured I should buy something off them considering how much I was lurking around their stall all day, staring at those beautiful blue frames.

3 years ago I saw an ad for a steel track frameset, my size, within my budget and looking good. So off I went to Bristol to pick it up. I arrived, checked the frame and agreed to make the transaction. It was a mid 70s silver enamelled Carlton, badged as a Marcarini, lovely it was, Fischer crown and everything. Yes please. But before I swapped my cash for the merchandise he offered to show me another frameset. “OK” I said. He then brought this out: A 1976 Team Raleigh track SB969 in ‘the’ colourway.

Dilemma. I’d always wanted one of these and this was again my size. It looked a bit tatty and the fork was rusted to within an inch of it’s life but then it’s not everyday someone presents you with one of these in your size. Even though the Raleigh was in much poorer condition to the Carlton he wanted more money for it. More than my budget. I got him to put wheels in both, stand them up side by side and I stared at them for a bit. The mental tussle went on for half an hour and then Bang! it finally happened. I saw the potential in that Red, yellow and black, I had chosen to burn the budget and I had bought the Raleigh.

Three years later and I still use it daily, rain or shine. It is scratched, battered and bruised but continuing to work like a beautifully oiled machine, hell it is a beautifully oiled machine! I love it and I can’t see it leaving my hands anytime soon. I’v had many bikes since this has been around but they’ve all gone to new homes, all except one.

I want to live in southern France one day and when I do I want this in the lounge.

One or the other.

You may or may not know that a few months ago I sold my ‘modern’ road bike, a Pinarello FP1. It was a lovely bike and we mostly got on well, it carried me over some miles and up a good few solid climbs, including the Galibier so I can’t grumble but towards the end of our relationship it’s fair to say that we fell out of love with each other for one reason or another. Which leads me to where I am at now… Sans bike. Well Sans bike with modern componentry anyway.

A while back I wrote about my love for the friction shifter, that love still remains BUT I have some things planned for the future in the way of big rides and I’v come to the conclusion that my 13-18 racing block and downtube shifting on my one remaining road steed isn’t cutting it. I need something, but I’m torn. Torn to pieces.

Here is the dilemma: I have a bike, it fits me and it looks good but the hardware needs updating. Do I go ahead and buy a modern gruppo for it and have it turn out like this absolute beauty:

Or do I buy a completely new bike? A Canyon. These bikes are totally ‘badass’ and great value too. I’d buy one of these – A Canyon Roadlite 7.0 with full Ultegra:

With the first option I’d probably save a bit of money and get to make the BRH look and perform much better but the latter option will make things just that little more ‘pro’. You can see my dilemma, right?

Right now I think I’m buying a gruppo but seriously, that could change at any moment. If Gilbert wins again aboard his Canyon I’m in trouble.

Oh and by the way, who’s owns the Cecil Walker?

Road bike with full aero styled Super Vitus 971 framework #M67666 finished in Mercier’s malve metallic. Shimano 600 EX group (6200), Belleri bar/stem, Ambrosio Montreal blue finished tubular rims, S.Marco Concor Supercorsa saddle and Wolber tubulars.

Beautiful bike. Great to see Shimano getting some love… And 600, too. A boss group.

Broke down bikes, Beaters, rat bikes, franken-bikes whatever you want to call them, I am a huge fan and this thread over at LFGSS has a bunch of great stuff. Some may make you shriek, laugh, or even vomit but the fact remains that these bikes are ridden every-single-day so a few chips and scrapes are inevitable!

I love well used track bikes so much that I am going to try and make this a regular post, so if you are the proud owner of a Lamb dressed as Mutton… send it my way!!!

I’ve always been a huge fan of the Levi’s/Raleigh Pro Team bikes(as seen below!), love Levi’s and of course Raleigh is doing great things these days. So when I had the chance to swoop some of these NOS Pro Team Toques, worn by the team during the 80’s, of course I didn’t say no! Now if only someone would make a re-issue kit(hint, hint). Hopefully this Commuter Line will get Levi’s psyched on cycling again and maybe even get them in the mood to co-sponsor another pro team.

Man I need one of those knits, for real.

We consider ourselves to be gloriously average cyclists. We appreciate the hard rides and the easy ones. Sometimes, we stop for coffee or beer and most of those times we linger a bit longer than you might expect. That is not to say that we do not relish the hard efforts that come with being a cyclist. The long pulls into a headwind or the climbs that dangle in front of you for what seem to be days. We have even found, a few of us, that we enjoy a trip or two over the pavé, or that we feel at home with gravel bouncing off our shins and shoes. Sometimes this makes us a little heady and we get caught up in the beauty and suffering of riding our bicycles, so we tend to think of ourselves as good riders. But that does not mean that for a minute, or second, do any of us think we can hold a candle to the professional peloton, to what it takes to be a professional cyclist. Read on…

Tim commutes on an old geared 90′s mountain bike nicknamed the “Monster Truck” and he came to me wanting something special as a second bike. He wanted a track frame for the road and something thats light, fast and a lot of fun, something thats a real contrast to his everyday ride, in his words “I want this one to be like a Ferrari in my shed”.

It’s got a sweet bar/stem combo, dropped seat stays, track ends with built in adjusters and I love the paint, every time I look at it reminds me of a Pantone swatch book. The frame is now waiting in the ‘shop for a full build…

Looking good, Tim. Shouts out to Tom Donhou on this one… It’s great to see new builders prosper.
