The AIS/RMIT Olympic Superbike is an example of innovation in design and engineering. The opportunity to stretch the limits of bicycle design came in 1996, when the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) changed the rules governing bicycle design to less restrictive specifications. Through some unusual circumstances a project team was drawn from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). The resulting bike, the Superbike, allowed many top athletes to break world records.

April 13, 2010Logo design comp!
April 13, 2010The writer of one of my favourite blogs, Simon Lamb of La Gazzetta Della Bici has recently opened up a competition for someone to come up with a design/logo for his new range of sportscare products:
You may or may not be aware that I have started selling Sportscare products including Embrocations and Sports Massage oils. These will soon be available to buy through my Etsy account, but, before then, I need to get a logo for the packaging of these projects and even though I used to be a typographer everything I have attempted to design has made me sick. So I thought I would open the design of a LOGOTYPE up to the readers of this blog. The prize or payment, as such, is all the sportscare products you can ever need to apply to your body and then when you run out I’ll send you more. I’m sorry I can’t pay any cold hard cash but I am completely broke and I won’t pretend I’m not. The brief for the Logotype are as follows:

April 9, 2010Charles Minthorn Murphy more popularly known as “Mile-a-Minute” Murphy, was an American cycling star from the late 19th century and early 20th century. His greatest claim to fame was being the first man ever to ride a bicycle for one mile in less than a minute in 1899.
This achievement was achieved by following an LIRR train car from Farmingdale to Babylon on Long Island.
Because of this stunt, he claimed to have thought up the concept of streamlining for automobiles and planes and said he was paid a sizeable amount for this idea.

April 7, 2010Pro Race Calender.
April 7, 2010I make no bones about the fact that I am an absolute ‘pro race’ novice, so this calender found at GDB is a godsend.
So, if like me you to need to brush up on your dates and get more involved in the world of the pro race circuit, then look no further.
Just download these images and print them out. Then hopefully in 2010 you will not miss another race and the next time your pal asks you whether you’re going to be watching something like the Liege-Bastogne-Liege your answer will not be “oh, when is that?” it will be “Yes, indeed I am!”
Thanks to Simon for posting this.
