I was only alerted to the sad death of Trevor Bull yesterday via Tx message from my good friend Keiran and although I only met Trevor a couple of times whilst visiting Harborne Cycle surgery I can still say what a fine chap he was.
For those not aware of this Birmingham cycling legend here is a little bit of background –
Trevor was an Olympic track rider namely in 1964 when he competed in the team pursuit, he held some UK records in his early days and then circa 1969 he turned pro for Sun -Truwell to ride on the road.
He crossed over from track to road very well and became a regular winner especially in the criterium races and flatter road races. Sponsor wise he spent most of his better days with Raleigh / Carlton teams and then Dawes.
Trevor Bull.

This guy could ride dude, One hard geezer, someone who sold me his peugot bike competed against him in a time trial once and said he left everyone behind. At the finishing line everyone was getting there hands on sarnies and drinks, Trevor marched straight in to the marque to collect his money got on his bike and rode straight home. The BULL.

I knew Trev for years, though Id lost touch recently. I think he was one of the longest serving active, professional bike riders ever. I am gutted that I missed his funeral, he was one of the good guys.

I also had lost contact with Trevor, I feel very misty-eyed about the old Tower cycles shop. I used to frequent there regularly (hope Deepinder will see the article also!) and not really buy much, but Trevor was an amazing cycle mechanic and source of bike info. After I bought my first fixed (old Tommy Godwin / Mercian) he was the one who really sold me on the idea.
And a very humble bloke too despite his racing past, I think he’d done the Amstel Gold classic, Paris-Nice etc in addition to all the track stuff.
He used to commute to Erdington on an old fixed hack with a dyno hub covered in insulation tape, he didn’t need anything flash-I guess he’d been through all that-I always used to feel a fraud buying all the new campag stuff when I’d see his bikes! I remember seeing some kid who worked at the shop trying to keep up with him going down Gravelley Hill.
He is a great loss to cycling and the world in general as anybody who knew him would agree.

I trained with TB in the 60s and was always amazed at his strength and fitness. He was also one of the nicest riders you could wish to meet.
Trevor was going to be at at The Hercules 100 this year with Tommy Godwin on August 1st and we are all very sad that he will not be with us.
RIP Trevor Bull, a true Birmingham Champion
