February 10, 2009A nice article on Ghost bikes in The Sun ( ? ) newspaper today.
At a distance they are unremarkable — simple bike frames bolted to lampposts, gates or railings. But up close, their ghostly white hue hints at a different dimension.

February 10, 2009Highgate has suddenly become Lowgate.
I rode through what was formally knows as ‘Highgate’ today and discovered most of the high-rise flats were either gone or going.
What ashame it is to see parts of Birmingham deteriorate like this.
Lets hope they build more ‘apartments’ in the void because that is just what we Birmingham folk need.
I think they call it ‘Regeneration’.
Regeneration my foot, it seems our council either overlook prime spots for development or bulldoze them.
Look at what is going on over at the ‘Lower east side’ aka Digbeth.
Amazing buildings raised to the ground leaving nothing but rubble, all for the sake of apartments that may be built…
Years of Birmingham history, erased.
This makes me want a Steel frame again.

Vintage Cycle Jersey Collection
February 5, 2009I have been looking for a nice woolen jersey to go underneath my jacket for a while, as wearing a cotton t-shirt was becoming insufficient.
I find the problem with jerseys is they fit too damn tight… and yes I know they are meant to but I come from the school of Hip Hop so when it comes to t-shirts and jumpers I am reaching for the XL.
Little did I know that a good quality vintage cycle shirt in an XL is quite rare.
After scouring Ebay and various shops looking for the ‘right one’ I got a call off Frank from Urban Village ( Birmingham’s finest dealer in all things vintage ) saying he had just had a big delivery of jerseys in from Belgium… so I went over last week and took a peep.
I have been after one of those Brooklyn chewing gum jerseys for a while and I thought I had got my mitts on one until I tried it on, too small.
I am not even that big!
I did manage to get one in the end and I love it.
The problem is now I have found one, I need another.
Peep more like these at his stall at the Custard Factory flea market every Sunday.

I first saw an image of one of these big boys built up over at the
ATX Fixed blogspace and I was intrigued.
Jesus! How big are those flanges?… excuse me.
Chub hubs feature a unique oversized carbon centre hub body, combined with huge aluminium flanges that reduce wind up in the hub shell as well as reducing peak spoke tension on the drive side by up to 70 per cent.
It also has the advantage of creating a very lightweight, yet super rigid structure that increases torsional stiffness and fatigue life. Hubs come with 6Al/4V titanium hardware, and 15mm rear bolt through axles.
Chub hubs are currently available in both 24h and 32h track (120 and 130mm rear spacing) and 32h MTB singlespeed pairs, the latter with ISO six-bolt disc mounts
Weights are 426g per pair (track) and 434g per pair (MTB).

February 3, 2009Last night me and the lady took a slow and slippy ride over to Cannon Hill park.
Armed with a flask of Hot Toddy ( which had way too much Courvoisier in it ) and a camera ( complete with gaffer taped fish eye ) I set about snapping.
I have come to the conclusion that I really must bite the bullet and start thinking about getting a ‘proper’ DSLR.
If I have to wrestle with my current camera again I will surely have to drop kick it into a pond or maybe smash it with a hammer, or better still a bat so as not to kill it too quick.

February 2, 2009It was all fun up until the point I started to lose the feeling in my toes.
Vans? I must be a complete idiot, honestly. 60s skate shoes and snow
do not mix and I really should know better.
Next time perhaps I will opt for something a little more ‘practical’.
